For SEV, all DMA to and from guest has to use shared (un-encrypted) pages. SEV uses SWIOTLB to make this happen without requiring changes to device drivers. However, depending on the workload being run, the default 64MB of it might not be enough and it may run out of buffers to use for DMA, resulting in I/O errors and/or performance degradation for high I/O workloads. Adjust the default size of SWIOTLB for SEV guests using a percentage of the total memory available to guest for the SWIOTLB buffers. 2020-11-27dma-mapping: add benchmark support for streaming DMA APIsBarry Song
Nowadays, there are increasing requirements to benchmark the performance of dma_map and dma_unmap particually while the device is attached to an IOMMU. This patch enables the support. Users can run specified number of threads to do dma_map_page and dma_unmap_page on a specific NUMA node with the specified duration. Then dma_map_benchmark will calculate the average latency for map and unmap. A difficulity for this benchmark is that dma_map/unmap APIs must run on a particular device. Each device might have different backend of IOMMU or non-IOMMU. 2020-11-27dma-mapping: Allow mixing bypass and mapped DMA operationAlexey Kardashevskiy
At the moment we allow bypassing DMA ops only when we can do this for the entire RAM. However there are configs with mixed type memory where we could still allow bypassing IOMMU in most cases; POWERPC with persistent memory is one example. This adds an arch hook to determine where bypass can still work and we invoke direct DMA API. The following patch checks the bus limit on POWERPC to allow or disallow direct mapping. 2020-11-02swiotlb: remove the tbl_dma_addr argument to swiotlb_tbl_map_singleChristoph Hellwig
The tbl_dma_addr argument is used to check the DMA boundary for the allocations, and thus needs to be a dma_addr_t. swiotlb-xen instead passed a physical address, which could lead to incorrect results for strange offsets. Fix this by removing the parameter entirely and hard code the DMA address for io_tlb_start instead. 2020-11-02swiotlb: fix "x86: Don't panic if can not alloc buffer for swiotlb"Stefano Stabellini
kernel/dma/swiotlb.c:swiotlb_init gets called first and tries to allocate a buffer for the swiotlb. It does so by calling memblock_alloc_low(PAGE_ALIGN(bytes), PAGE_SIZE); If the allocation must fail, no_iotlb_memory is set. Later during initialization swiotlb-xen comes in (drivers/xen/swiotlb-xen.c:xen_swiotlb_init) and given that io_tlb_start is != 0, it thinks the memory is ready to use when actually it is not. When the swiotlb is actually needed, swiotlb_tbl_map_single gets called and since no_iotlb_memory is set the kernel panics. Instead, if swiotlb-xen.c:xen_swiotlb_init knew the swiotlb hadn't been initialized, it would do the initialization itself, which might still succeed. Fix the panic by setting io_tlb_start to 0 on swiotlb initialization failure, and also by setting no_iotlb_memory to false on swiotlb initialization success. The memory size calculation in cma_early_percent_memory() traverses memblock.memory rather than simply call memblock_phys_mem_size(). The comment in that function suggests that at some point there should have been call to memblock_analyze() before memblock_phys_mem_size() could be used. As of now, there is no memblock_analyze() at all and memblock_phys_mem_size() can be used as soon as cold-plug memory is registered with memblock. Replace loop over memblock.memory with a call to memblock_phys_mem_size(). On an embedded system with a tiny (1 MiB) CMA area for video memory, and a simple enough video pipeline, we can decrease the CMA_ALIGNMENT by a factor of 2 to avoid wasting memory, as all the allocations for video buffers will be of the exact same size (dictated by the size of the screen). 2020-09-17dma-mapping: introduce DMA range map, supplanting dma_pfn_offsetJim Quinlan
The new field 'dma_range_map' in struct device is used to facilitate the use of single or multiple offsets between mapping regions of cpu addrs and dma addrs. It subsumes the role of "dev->dma_pfn_offset" which was only capable of holding a single uniform offset and had no region bounds checking. The function of_dma_get_range() has been modified so that it takes a single argument -- the device node -- and returns a map, NULL, or an error code. The map is an array that holds the information regarding the DMA regions. Each range entry contains the address offset, the cpu_start address, the dma_start address, and the size of the region. of_dma_configure() is the typical manner to set range offsets but there are a number of ad hoc assignments to "dev->dma_pfn_offset" in the kernel driver code. These cases now invoke the function dma_direct_set_offset(dev, cpu_addr, dma_addr, size). When booting the kernel v5.9-rc4 on a VM, the kernel would panic when printing a warning message in swiotlb_map(). The dev->dma_mask must not be a NULL pointer when calling the dma mapping layer. A NULL pointer check can potentially avoid the panic.
