2023-12-21Detect and prevent recursive config parsingNeil Horman
If a malformed config file is provided such as the following: openssl_conf = openssl_init [openssl_init] providers = provider_sect [provider_sect] = provider_sect The config parsing library will crash overflowing the stack, as it recursively parses the same provider_sect ad nauseum. Prevent this by maintaing a list of visited nodes as we recurse through referenced sections, and erroring out in the event we visit any given section node more than once. Note, adding the test for this revealed that our diagnostic code inadvertently pops recorded errors off the error stack because provider_conf_load returns success even in the event that a configuration parse failed. The call path to provider_conf_load has been updated in this commit to address that shortcoming, allowing recorded errors to be visibile to calling applications. 2023-11-06Make DH_check_pub_key() and DH_generate_key() safer yetRichard Levitte
We already check for an excessively large P in DH_generate_key(), but not in DH_check_pub_key(), and none of them check for an excessively large Q. This change adds all the missing excessive size checks of P and Q. It's to be noted that behaviours surrounding excessively sized P and Q differ. DH_check() raises an error on the excessively sized P, but only sets a flag for the excessively sized Q. This behaviour is mimicked in DH_check_pub_key(). 2023-03-01Fix infinite loops in DSA sign code.slontis
Fixes #20268 Values such as q=1 or priv=0 caused infinite loops when calling DSA_sign() without these changes. There are other cases where bad domain parameters may have caused infinite loops where the retry counter has been added. The simpler case of priv=0 also hits this case. q=1 caused an infinite loop in the setup. The max retry value has been set to an arbitrary value of 8 (it is unlikely to ever do a single retry for valid values). The minimum q bits was set to an arbitrary value of 128 (160 is still used for legacy reasons when using 512 bit keys). Thanks @guidovranken for detecting this, and @davidben for his insightful analysis. 2022-11-25Implements Hybrid Public Key Encryption (HPKE) as per RFC9180.Stephen Farrell
This supports all the modes, suites and export mechanisms defined in RFC9180 and should be relatively easily extensible if/as new suites are added. The APIs are based on the pseudo-code from the RFC, e.g. OSS_HPKE_encap() roughly maps to SetupBaseS(). External APIs are defined in include/openssl/hpke.h and documented in doc/man3/OSSL_HPKE_CTX_new.pod. Tests (test/hpke_test.c) include verifying a number of the test vectors from the RFC as well as round-tripping for all the modes and suites. We have demonstrated interoperability with other HPKE implementations via a fork [1] that implements TLS Encrypted ClientHello (ECH) which uses HPKE. @slontis provided huge help in getting this done and this makes extensive use of the KEM handling code from his PR#19068. 2022-10-05Stop raising ERR_R_MALLOC_FAILURE in most placesRichard Levitte
Since OPENSSL_malloc() and friends report ERR_R_MALLOC_FAILURE, and at least handle the file name and line number they are called from, there's no need to report ERR_R_MALLOC_FAILURE where they are called directly, or when SSLfatal() and RLAYERfatal() is used, the reason `ERR_R_MALLOC_FAILURE` is changed to `ERR_R_CRYPTO_LIB`. There were a number of places where `ERR_R_MALLOC_FAILURE` was reported even though it was a function from a different sub-system that was called. Those places are changed to report ERR_R_{lib}_LIB, where {lib} is the name of that sub-system. Some of them are tricky to get right, as we have a lot of functions that belong in the ASN1 sub-system, and all the `sk_` calls or from the CRYPTO sub-system. Some extra adaptation was necessary where there were custom OPENSSL_malloc() wrappers, and some bugs are fixed alongside these changes.
